SCIENTIFIC ATTITUDE AND CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS: THE IMPACT OF GENDER AND MANAGEMENT

Abstract

Students' future academic achievement in secondary school depends on developing both a scientific mindset and critical thinking abilities. The study aimed to measure the level of scientific attitude and critical thinking skills among secondary school students and to identify any significant differences in their scientific attitude and critical thinking skills based on gender and management style. A descriptive survey research design was employed to conduct the study. A sample of 200 Class IX students was randomly selected from government and private schools in the Kohima and Dimapur districts of Nagaland. Two research instruments were used for data collection: the scientific attitude questionnaire developed by the investigators and the Critical Thinking Skills Scale developed by Murthy (2014), which was modified to suit the needs and context of Nagaland. The collected data were analyzed using percentages, means, standard deviations, correlations, chi-square tests, and t-tests for independent samples. The study revealed that the level of scientific attitude and critical thinking skills among secondary school students varied. Scientific attitude and critical thinking skills were not significantly influenced by gender. Scientific attitude and critical thinking skills were significantly influenced by management. It was found that there is a positive correlation between scientific attitude and critical thinking skills among secondary school students. The findings of this study suggest that teachers should design an engaging science curriculum that incorporates more hands-on activities, project-based learning, classroom discussions, model exhibitions, science fairs, science museums, and field trips in order to foster a scientific mindset in their pupils.

Rajendra Nath Babu Murathoti, holds a Post Graduate degree in Mathematics, Sociology, Psychology, English and Education (M.Ed.-University 1st Rank), M. Phil. and obtained Ph.D. in Education from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Inida. Presently he is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Education, Nagaland University (A Central University), Nagaland, India. He has 15 years research and teaching experience at B.Ed., M.Ed., M.A.(Education), Ph.D. levels. For his credit, from 2015, he has published 26 articles in various national and international journals including UGC Care Listed, Scopus & Web of Sciences, 9 books, 11 book chapters and 4 Psychological Tests with Manuals.  He has Completed 2 Research Projects funded by PMMMNMTT(MHRD) Scheme, Ministry of Education, New Delhi, & Samagra Shiksha, Nagaland Education Mission Society, Government of Nagaland. His area of interest lies in Pedagogy Teaching Mathematics, ICT in Education, Teacher Education, Higher Education, Special Education, Educational Psychology, and Environmental Education

Atokali, holds an M.Sc.  Zoology from NEHU, Shillong, India and M.Ed. (Gold Medalist) from Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, Nagaland, India. She has taught as a Post Graduate Techer (Contractual) in Zoology in Government Higher School in Peren, Nagaland, India and also taught as Post Graduate Teacher in Biology (Contractual)in PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dimapur, Nagaland, India. Her area of interest lies in Science Education, Environmental Education, and Biological Science.

Ankita Lahon , Research Scholar, Department of Education, Nagaland University (A Central University), India

Ankita Lahon is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Education from Nagaland University, Nagaland, India. She holds a Masters of Arts degree in Education from Tezpur University, Assam, India. She worked as an Assistant Professor in Nazir Ajmal Memorial College of Education from April, 2022 to August, 2023. Her areas of research interest include Educational Psychology and Educational Management.

Srinivasan Padmanaban , Professor, Department of Education, Central University of Tamil Nadu, India

Srinivasan Padmanaban possesses 24 years of experience in Teacher Education and presently working as Professor in Department of Education, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu, India. His areas of specialization were Educational Psychology, and ICT. He is an editorial member of 02 Journals and also a member of various university committees, NAAC, NCTE, BoS, and School Board member. He mentored and guided 01 Postdoctoral, 14 Ph.D., 38 M.Phil., and 11 M.Ed. scholars. He has completed 01 Major and 04 Minor Research Projects. He has published 68 Articles in Journals, authored 07 Books, edited 04 Books, translated 01 Book, written 08 Chapters in a Book, and Developed 02 Psychological Tools.
